On the bookshelf -- August

Today we are sharing some of the books we have read this past month. We seem to have a little extra time to read during the summer (mostly in between customers at our sno cone shack) than we do during the winter, so we've been taking full advantage of that!

One of the books I read this month was The Tattooist of Auschwtiz by Heather Morris. This book is fairly short in length, but it took me longer than I had expected to read it because it was pretty graphic & raw. The honesty of the book made it difficult to read, but that's also what made this book so good. The main character was a prisoner in Auschwitz whose job was to tattoo numbers of identification onto the arms of new prisoners who were brought to the concentration camp. This book was absolutely fascinating & horrifying at the same time. I would 100% recommend it just because for me, I want to be continuously learning about history & beautiful stories displaying human resilience.

The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine was a fun one! There was a HUGE plot twist about halfway through the book that I was totally NOT expecting! I kind of like books like that. Something that surprises me & leaves me on the edge of my seat wanting to read more. This book shows just how much jealousy, status, & money can really drive a person & wowza, things can get very complicated when you get wrapped up in all of that. It's about an incredibly wealthy family & a young girl who wiggles her way right into the middle of their lives. She gets close enough that she's able to manipulate them & turn their lives completely upside down. But is that such a bad thing? You'll have to read to find out!

Summer by the Tides by Denise Hunter was honestly such a perfect book to read during the summer! It was a great light + easy read, & as I'm sure you can tell by the cover & the title, takes place in the summer on a beach. ;) There's a bit of romance & family drama that made this book interesting & kept me wanting to read more. A lot of the books I've been reading lately are psychological thrillers or mysteries, which I really enjoy. But it's also nice to take a little break & read something that is incredibly sweet & doesn't so much follow the plot of a thriller. Also, this book is very PG which I appreciate!

My sister, Bethany, read Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis. As you can guess by just reading the title, this is a love story book. Bethany said there was a lot of family drama & some parts of the book were definitely rated R which she was surprised by. She said it was a very easy read & wasn't hard to get through at all. When I asked her if she liked it & would recommend it, she said "ehh I guess" so interpret that answer however you may! I plan on reading it sometime so I'm curious to see what I think of it too.

Have you ever heard of the “goodreads” app? It’s a free app that lets you track your reading progress, rate books you’ve read, keep a list of your want-to-read books, set yearly reading goals & follow along with what your friends are reading as well! It even gives you suggestions based off of your ratings & the types of books you read. We both really like it. You should check it out!
