On the bookshelf in May
The first book I read was Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score. This one is on kindle unlimited. Wowza there is SO MUCH to unpack with this book that I don’t even know where to get started! The chapters jump back & forth between two main characters: Knox Morgan & Naomi Witt. Knox is exactly what would come to mind when you think “bad guy”. He’s covered in tattoos, super muscular, has a thick beard, beautiful eyes, & quite an attitude. Naomi is pretty much the exact opposite — she’s kind & dainty & a people pleaser & always looking for ways to help others. They couldn’t be more opposite!! In fact, Knox’s nickname for Naomi is “Daisy” & Naomi’s nickname for Knox is “Viking”. See what I mean? But, like all good stories, opposites attract. But this book is so much more than just a love story. Naomi & Knox’s paths cross because Naomi is brought to his town (Knockemout (yes, you read that right lol)) by a common denominator — her twin sister, Tina (who is every school counselor / police officer’s worst nightmare). I don’t want tot give much away, so I’m going to stop there. All I’ll say is that there were lots of plot twists & turns that I totally didn’t see coming & I can usually predict things! The last fifty pages or so had my heart racing so much that my watch told me to breathe multiple times lol. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the sex scenes. There are a handful of them that are like rated R x 10000000. They’re graphic & honestly pretty uncomfortable to read, so I’d skim the pages until it was over. But I loved the story line enough to keep going! I ended up giving this book four out of five stars. At the end of the epilogue, the author mentions there will be a second book coming out!
The second book I read was Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover. This book is also on kindle unlimited. Since I’m a school counselor & I spend my year hearing hard stories, I pretty much always have to save the books that have a lot of depth for the summer months. This one fits right into that category. I am usually really good at predicting books, nothing usually gets passed me. & that’s how it was for the first 80% of this book. But of course, like all good books, this one had a massive plot twist that even I didn’t see coming! I don’t want to give much away, so I’m not going to say anything else! I gave this book five out of five stars.
Have you ever read the whole Bible? I’ve always wanted to & I’ve tried a few times but it’s hard. It’s just so hard to understand! I had heard several people talk about the Bible Recap: A One-Year Guide to Reading & Understanding the Entire Bible & wanted to give it a try. Tara-Leigh Cobble walks you through reading the Bible chronologically in one year & she has a podcast that goes along with it. While that all sounds great, I knew that truly reading it every single day was not attainable for me. Yes, I feel guilty saying that. After all, He has done for me, I should be able to spend that much time each day reading His word. However, I know myself & I know I wouldn’t & I also know that getting behind would stress me out & then I’d want to give up completely. Then she wrote a book & I knew this was the answer! I just read it when I can! I try to make it a priority but if it doesn’t happen that day, it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world. Her summary of what you read is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe how much I’ve learned already!! It’s designed to be read in a year, however if it takes me two, that’s okay! Because reading the entire Bible in two years is better than not at all. If I’m honest, I’ll probably start over once I finish because it’s that good & I’m sure I’ll learn something new each time, because He’s where the joy is!
