On the bookshelf in November
My school year has been pretty crazy & busy so I haven’t done a very good job of keeping up on my reading & I’ve missed it! It took me like two months to get through The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni. If I’m being totally honest, it was fairly dry & I just didn’t love it / wasn’t invested, so I think that was part of what took me so long to get through it & kind of made me give up on reading for a hot minute. It tells the story of a man named Sam Hell who has a very rare medical condition that makes his eyes red. This obviously creates some hardships in his life. I gave this book three out of five stars.
I watched season one of Firefly Lane on Netflix last year & LOVED it! When I heard they were coming out with season two on December 2nd, I hurried up & read the two books by Kristin Hannah. & y'all. I was WRECKED! There's SO MUCH that the Netflix show doesn't tell you yet & I was absolutely blown away by the books. Now I'm even more excited for season 2 to see how they portray everything! I gave both Firefly Lane (book #1) & Fly Away (book #2) four out of five stars.
I also read The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore. This book is based back in the 1920s when leprosy was on the rise & there was so much unknown about the disease. Mirielle West, who lives quite the elaborate life with her movie star husband & their children, comes down with leprosy & is shipped off to a “camp for lepers”. While at the camp, Mirielle meets all kinds of different people who make her think differently about the life she had been living. She ultimately gets to know a different part of herself (hence the title of the book). I was surprised at how captivated I was by this book & how easily / quickly I read through it. I ended up giving it five out of five stars!
Have you ever read the whole Bible? I’ve always wanted to & I’ve tried a few times but it’s hard. It’s just so hard to understand! I had heard several people talk about the Bible Recap: A One-Year Guide to Reading & Understanding the Entire Bible & wanted to give it a try. Tara-Leigh Cobble walks you through reading the Bible chronologically in one year & she has a podcast that goes along with it. While that all sounds great, I knew that truly reading it every single day was not attainable for me. Yes, I feel guilty saying that. After all He has done for me, I should be able to spend that much time each day reading His word. However, I know myself & I know I wouldn’t & I also know that getting behind would stress me out & then I’d want to give up completely. Then she wrote a book & I knew this was the answer! I just read it when I can! I try to make it a priority but if it doesn’t happen that day, it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world. Her summary of what you read is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe how much I’ve learned already!! It’s designed to be read in a year, however if it takes me two, that’s okay! Because reading the entire Bible in two years is better than not at all. If I’m honest, I’ll probably start over once I finish because it’s that good & I’m sure I’ll learn something new each time, because He’s where the joy is!
