monday morning mindfulness: the miracle question
I am so thankful for this online community & I want to be a little more intentional about chatting about things, encouraging one another, & reminding each other that many of us are probably feeling similar things, or have at different times. These monday morning mindfulness posts are going to be little glimpses into my heart & life: the good, the bad & the ugly. So much can be learned from different experiences, especially when you are practicing mindfulness.
With all of that being said, today’s topic is: the miracle question.
Recently I was giving my youngest sister free therapy ;) & talking through options with her for switching her major. During our conversation, I asked her the miracle question (one of my favorite things to ask students who are conflicted about something & are having a hard time “finding the answer”).
a little background...
The miracle question is a common approach used in SFT, or Solution-Focused Therapy. SFT is strength-based, meaning it focuses on the positives rather than the negatives, with an emphasis on solution-building rather than problem-solving. Asking the miracle question can help with goal setting. In general, the miracle question asks:
Of course depending on the situation, you can phrase the miracle question to be a little bit more direct. So with my sister, I asked her: if money didn’t matter, education didn’t matter, other people’s opinions didn’t matter; what would you want to be? Asking the miracle question helps you get to the root of what you want to change / what is most important. Then, once you’ve identified the area, you can start to set goals. Of course, sometimes the answer to the miracle question isn’t always realistic, but it can still be used as a guiding tool to help answer questions along the journey.
