On the bookshelf -- September
Are you a reader? I LOVE to read & am currently on my 18th book of 2019. Alli rediscovered her love of reading this summer when she was finally able to read things she was interested in again & not just what was assigned to her for her college classes. We hope to share with you some of our hits & misses at least once a month. We won't be giving you actual summaries of each book because there are professionals out there for that, am I right? But we will let you know if we liked it or not & the reasons behind that. If you have any book recommendations for us, we would love to hear them! Okay, let's get started. First up...
Where the Crawdads Sing was our favorite book we read this summer! It's set in a different time period & Delia Owens does such a good job of making you feel like you're right there watching it all unfold. It's full of twists & turns that we didn't expect. This book definitely kept us on our toes & the anticipation of what actually happened went right up to the end. We were both sad when the book was over & that's definitely a sign of a good book!
Before We Were Yours was a close second for both of us. It was beautiful & heartbreaking all at the same time. It makes you really think about where you came from & what kind of lives those before us have lived. A great book that hits you right in the feels. Realizing that it was loosely written about a real life scandal made it all the more heartbreaking.
Most of our days are pretty ordinary, simple days, at least mine are anyway. While I loved the concept of the book, Liturgy of the Ordinary about how to embrace the sacred in the ordinary, overall I found it difficult to get through. It was just a harder read for me, however, it was a good reminder that we can make all the simple, ordinary moments of our day have more meaning if we're more intentional about it. What's your opinion about finishing a book? Do you put it down if you just can't get into it or if it's not what you were expecting? If you do, please teach me your ways! Sometimes, I find myself doing other less useful things with my time (netflix, I'm talking to you!) when I'm not enjoying a book, instead of just putting it down & moving on to the next. This was one I definitely had to push myself to keep reading because I genuinely wanted to absorb the content. If you've read this, let me know your thoughts!
Have you ever heard of the "goodreads" app? It's a free app that lets you track your reading progress, rate books you've read, keep a list of your want-to-read books, set yearly reading goals & follow along with what your friends are reading as well! It even gives you suggestions based off of your ratings & the types of books you read. We both really like it. You should check it out!
Do you have any good book recommendations for us? Let us know!
